Driving Directions
From San Jose Airport

Driving from the San Jose Airport to Playa Grande typically takes 4 – 5 hours.
  1. From the San Jose Airport, get on Route 1.
  1. After 7.4 kilometers, exit right toward Radial El Coyol.  At first roundabout, take the first exit onto Radial El Coyol.  At the second roundabout, take the second exit onto Radial El Coyol.
  1. Stay on Radial El Coyol for 4.5 kilometers. Radial El Coyol will end and turn into another roundabout.  Take the first exit to merge onto Route 27.
  1. Stay on Route 27 for about 53 kilometers, at which point Route 27 curves and turns into Route 23.
  1. Stay on Route 23 for approximately 12 kilometers, at which point Route 23 will end.  Continue going straight, and this will put you on a rounded exit which will take you west on Route 1.
  1. Stay on Route 1 for approximately 50 kilometers, then turn left onto Route 18.  The easiest landmark to look for here is Tres Hermanas BBQ Restaurant (there is a giant bull at the corner).
  1. Stay on Route 18 for approximately 50 kilometers.  While on Route 18, you will pass over a large bridge called Puente Amistad Tempisque.  After 50 kilometers, Route 18 will end in a t-intersection.  Turn right here to turn onto Route 21.
  1. After driving on Route 21 for about 40 kilometers, you will see signs pointing left for Tamarindo.  Do NOT take this left.  Continue on Route 21 for approximately 10 more kilometers, at which point you will turn left at the gas station to get onto the 155.  There will be signs pointing this way for Tamarindo, Flamingo, and Playa Danta.
  1. After about 20 minutes, you will pass a gas station on your left called Oasis.  Continue going straight along this road, which will take you up over a mountain, and then back down the other side.  Once you come down the mountain, you will see a left turn with signs pointing towards Tamarindo.  Do not take this left turn!  Staying straight, you will see a supermarket called Super Compro on your right, about 200 meters past the Tamarindo turnoff.  Continue going straight on this road.  You’ll soon pass a turnoff on the right for Flamingo and Conchal.  Do not take this right turn!
  1. Still continuing straight, you will soon come to a small town called Matapalo.  After passing the soccer field on your right and Charlie’s Bar on your left, you will come to a t-intersection.  Turn left at this intersection.  Soon after turning left, you will pass over a one-lane bridge, so please use caution
  1. Continue on this road for another 10 minutes. This road will take you over another winded mountain road.  After coming down off the mountain, you will pass by a blue supermarket on your left called Wil-Mart.  Soon after this, you will begin to see apartments, hotels, and restaurants which are all part of Playa Grande.  You’ll pass by Mato’s Surf Shop on your right, then Kike’s Place restaurant on your left; soon after this, follow the road around left, and you’ll pass Frijoles Locos surf shop on your left.
  1. Continue down this road for just a few seconds until you see a big billboard on your left. Turn left at this billboard.
  1. Follow the road for a few seconds until the paved roads ends and turn right. BP Surf Hotel is the first hotel on your right.
